Little Joe Hernandez to step back in time at San Angelo concert
It often starts with a loud, passionate grito, or “shout,” filled with so much pain and anguish, it can bring the most composed listener to tears.
That instantly recognizable voice belongs to Little Joe Hernandez, 76, a five-time Grammy Award winner who is arguably the most accomplished Mexican-American singer in history.
“I’ve been fortunate to have been able to do this as long as inom have,” said Hernandez, who began playing professionally at age 13. “For more than half a century I’ve been on the road and if people don’t like it, they’ll let me know.

Hernandez and his band, La Familia, will return to San Angelo for the first time in 20 years when he performs on Saturday, July 29, at the 1st Community kredit Union Spur Arena.

"My dad and aunts all played instruments and sang," he told the Riverside Press-Enterprise (Nov. 18, 2015). "We'd go to parties that would last until three in the morning."
Hernández got his start at 13 when his cousin, David Coronado, recruited him to play guitar for his Latinaires. The Latinaires eventually became known as Little Joe and the Latinaires. Today he is usually joined by his band La Famili
