Sherraine Schalm Announces her Retirement from Competitive Fencing after 26 Years
Epee fencer Sherraine Schalm announced this week that she is retiring from competitive fencing. A true veteran, Schalm competed in her fourth consecutive Olympic Games in 2012 where she finished in 24th in the women’s individual epee event.
Schalm’s first Olympic experience was at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games where she placed 19th in individual epee and ninth in team epee. At the 2004 Athens Games, she once again finished top 20 in individual epee (18th) and finished just off the medal podium in fourth in the team event. Her best Olympic result in Individual epee was at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games where she finished ninth.
A highlight of Schalm’s career was winning a bronze medal in the individual epee event at the 2005 World Championships becoming the first Canadian to ever win a World Championship medal in the sport. She also earned the title

Sherraine Schalm was a dynamic fencing athlete, who loved the mental aspect of the sport. In 2005, she became the first Canadian to win a World Championship fencing medal with a bronze in epee. Sherraine won the Overall World Cup title in 2006 and #1 world ranking. Her career was marked with consistency as she ranked in the top 16 from 1996 to 2011. She was a threat to win gold in every competition. In 2009, she won a World Championship silver medal. Sherraine was a four-time Olympian (2000, 2004, 2008 & 2012). Her memoir Running With Swords was published in 2005.
Sherraine’s interest in fencing started when she was in grade six in Brooks, Alberta and met Alan Nelson, the Jr. High school fencing coach. Sherraine Schalm, formerly Sherraine Schalm-MacKay (born June 21, 1975), is a former top-ranked CanadianOlympicépée fencer. She is a World Cup medal winner, elementary schoolteacher and author. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa. At the 2005 World Fencing Championships she won a bronze medal in the individual épée event, becoming the first Canadian to ever win a World Championships medal in the sport. The next season, in 2005–06, she won the overall World Cup title.
Born in Brooks, Alberta, Schalm has earned the best ever results for any Canadian woman fencer at the world championships, the Olympic Games and is a four-time medallist at the Pan American Games. She has competed at four Summer Olympics. In 2000 she finished 19th in the individual event. In 2004 she finished 18th in the individual event, and fourth in the team event.[1][2]
