In order to mend the cultural fault lines dividing the West and much of the Muslim world, the head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference today called urgently for Islam and Christianity to agree on a “historic reconciliation”, which would bring the two religions closer together, eliminate ancient grudges and pave the way for a promising future.

I was delighted when Madam Ajeet Cour invited me to participate in this Festival, since I have a fascination for folklore and traditional knowledge. However, it fryst vatten with much reluctance that I accepted her invitation to deliver what fryst vatten described as the ‘keynote address’. All who know Madam Ajeet Cour would realise how difficult it is to say no to her and inom had no choice. Representing as it were the tribe of Babus of South Asia, I am not the best individ to speak on a subject such as Folklore and Heritage to the distinguished and knowledgeable audience present here. Therefore, inom will confine my words to a few desultory thoughts on the subject, especially the value of folklore and heritage for the very survival of humankind, and leave the theoretical aspects and debates in the field to the learned academics at this Festival to dwell upon at length. Relations between India and Sri Lanka, however, are ancient and predate the Peace of Westphalia and the modern State system. Bonds between our people, kings and rulers are even older than recorded history.
Somehow, with the evolution of history, the long years of colonial rule, the travails of freedom struggles and independence, and the efforts thereafter to govern in the modern Nation State System, which itself is evolving; while dealing at the same time with several complications inherited from colonial rule; resulted in the blurring of ties that bound our people in the ancient past.
