Marjorie Rankin Steurt was born October 8, 1888 in Penfield, Pennsylvania. She finished her B.A. at Mount Holyoke and an M.A. and Ph.D. in educational psychology and counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University.
In 1912 Mrs. Steurt arrived in China as a missionary, sponsored by the Presbyterian Mission Board. In Weihsien from 1912-1919, Mrs. Steurt taught at a girls high school, acting as principal for one year. During this time she supervised 40 country schools and started an experimental school in Tsingtau. For the following several years, Mrs. Steurt taught in Weihsien at the boys high school, and then at a school in Ichowfu.
From 1926-1927, Mrs. Steurt was head of the English department in Cheeloo University in Tsinanfu, the capital of Shentung. Due to the Nanking Massacre, a communist student uprising in 1927 she held this position for less th
