    Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks‭ (‬‭) Seretha Williams BIOGRAPHY ‭ ‬Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks,‭ ‬the first African American to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry,‭ ‬was born to David and Keziah Brooks in Topeka,‭ ‬Kansas.‭ ‬Shortly after her birth in‭ ‬,‭ ‬Brooks‭’‬ family moved to the South Side of Chicago,‭ ‬Illinois.‭ ‬The setting and the people of the South Side serve as the backdrop and subject matter of much of her poetry.‭ ‬With the encouragement of her mother,‭ ‬Keziah,‭ ‬who predicted that Gwendolyn would be the‭ “‬lady Paul Laurence Dunbar,‭”‬ Brooks at the age of eleven began to keep a notebook of her writings.‭ ‬As a thirteen-year-old,‭ ‬her first poem,‭ “‬Eventide,‭”‬ was published in‭ ‬American Childhood Magazine.‭ ‬Soon after,‭ ‬Brooks met James Weldon Johnson and Langston Hughes,‭ ‬who urged her to read the modern poetry of T.S.‭ ‬Eliot,‭ ‬Ezra Pound,‭ ‬and e.e.‭ ‬cummings. ‭ ‬In‭ ‬,‭ ‬Brooks began to contribute poems to the‭ ‬Chicago
