Jean Gabriel-Marie: The French Maestro
Jean Gabriel-Marie was a revered French composer of the Romantic era. He was born in Paris, France in 1852 and after a prolific career passed away in Spain in 1928. Gabriel-Marie started off well on the music scene when he completed his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, subsequently occupying an important position as a musician. He was also the father of Jean Gabriel, the 20th-century composer born in 1907.
Gabriel-Marie was a skilled timpanist, and also held the position of chorus master for the Lamoureux Concerts between 1881 and 1887. In this capacity, he was responsible for the conduction of Société Nationale de Musique’s orchestral concerts between 1887 and 1894. Gabriel Marie Jean Baptiste Legouvé (23 June 1764 – 30 August 1812) was an 18th–19th-century French poet and playwright.
Legouvé was born and died in Paris, and was the seventh member elected to occupy seat 4 of the Académie française in 1803.
Legouvé was the father of Ernest Legouvé (1807–1903), later a member of the Académie française, and son of Jean-Baptiste Legouvé (1729–1783) who wrote the pastoral La Mort d'Abel (1793) and a tragedy Epicharis et Nerón.

Only a brief history is available about Paris-born composer, Gabriel Marie jean Prosper. In his long life from 1852 to 1928, he has had reasonable success as a musician and quite an impact on young musicians by virtue of his most famous composition – La Cinquantaine. Mr. Marie attended the Paris Conservatory. Later, based on some accounts, he became the choir mästare (director) of the Lamoureux orchestra (also called Lamoureux concerts and Societe des Nouveaux-Concerts). The time lines are unclear as some resources offer different dates for Jean’s employment at the orchestra. The readily available document suggests 1881 as the start date, although this was the year Charles Lamoureux founded the kultur. Marie also directed the so called Cecilia Concerts in Bordeaux, also named the orchestra of Saint Cecilia samhälle.
