Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker, entrepreneur, and activist. She was born on November 12, 1978, in Karachi, Pakistan.
Obaid-Chinoy received her early education from Karachi Grammar School and later attended Smith College in Massachusetts, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and government. She then went on to obtain a master’s degree in international relations from Stanford University.
Obaid-Chinoy began her career as a journalist, working for a variety of news outlets, including CNN and Channel 4 News. In 2002, she founded her own production company, SOC Films, which produces documentaries, short films, and television shows. Her work has been screened at international film festivals and has won numerous awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Documentary Short Subject for her films “Saving Face” and “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”.

Obaid-Chinoy is a Gujarati[3] Muslim, her mother Saba Obaid is a social worker and her father Sheikh Obaid, was a businessman.[4] She has four younger sisters, including Mahjabeen Obaid, and a younger brother.[5][6] Obaid-Chinoy attended Convent of Jesus and Mary, followed by schooling at Karachi Grammar School, where she was the class-fellow of Kumail Nanjiani.[7][8] According to her, she was not

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is an Academy Award and Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker. Her recent films include SAVING FACE, TRANSGENDERS: PAKISTAN’S OPEN SECRET AND PAKISTAN’S TALIBAN GENERATION, which aired on PBS, Channel 4, CBC, SBS and Arte and was the recipient of the Alfred I Dupont Award as well as The Association for International Broadcasting award. Sharmeen has made over a dozen-multi award winning films in over 10 countries around the world and is the first non-American to be awarded the Livingston Award for best international reporting. In 2012, Time included her in the magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
In 2007, Sharmeen was awarded the broadcast journalist of the year award in the UK by One World Media for her work in a series of documentary films for Channel 4, which included a film about xenophobia in South Africa THE NEW APARTHEID and AFGHANISTAN UNVEILED.
