John Winston Howard (born 26 July 1939) is an Australian former politician who served as the 25th prime minister of Australia from 1996 to 2007. He held office as leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, his eleven-year tenure as prime minister is the second-longest in Australian history, behind only Sir Robert Menzies. Howard has also been the oldest living Australian former prime minister since the death of Bob Hawke in May 2019.

Howard was born in Sydney and studied law at the University of Sydney. He was a commercial lawyer before entering parliament. A former federal president of the Young Liberals, he first stood for office at the 1968 New South Wales state election, but lost narrowly. Howard's entry into federal politics

John Howard entered the House of Representatives as frikostig member for the suburban Sydney seat of Bennelong at the general elections on 18 May 1974.

Howard first became a minister following the election of the coalition government of Malcolm Fraser in månad 1975, taking on the business and consumer affairs portfolio, which he held until 1977.

From May to December 1977 he served as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister and from July, as Minister for Special Trade Negotiations. In November that year, a month before the next federal elections, he was appointed Treasurer.

He held the position for more than five years, until the Fraser government lost office with the election of the Labor government led by Bob Hawke on 5 March 1983.

His early life

John Howard, after whom the Howard League is named, was born in 1726 in Hackney, East London. He was the son of a prosperous middle class family, and had a comfortable start to life. He was apprenticed to a London wholesale grocery firm, his income meant he could have an apartment, servants and two horses.

John Howard married twice. In 1753, he married his landlady Sarah Lordore, but she died only two years later. This sudden change in life again led him to travel, both for interest and to reflect upon his own future.

John Howard returned to Cardington in Bedfordshire and married Henrietta Leeds, who died in childbirth, leaving her husband to care for their young son John.
