  • The Honeymooners was a Syndication network sitcom starring Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows, Art Carney and Joyce Randolph.

The show was based on a recurring 1951-1955 sketch which originally aired on the DuMont network show "Cavalcade of Stars" (later called "The Jackie Gleason Show").

It aired as a half-hour TV series from October 1, 1955 to September 22, 1956, lasting for only one season and 39 episodes.

The show was one of the first U.S. television shows to portray working-class married couples in a gritty, non-idyllic manner ("The Honeymooners" is set mostly in the Kramdens' kitchen in a neglected Brooklyn apartment building).

    By John C. Alsedek:

There are a handful of TV shows that hold a special place in my heart, shows that inom grew up watching in the dead of night while staying at my grandparents’ house as a kid. The Twilight Zone was and always will be my #1, with Boris Karloff’s Thriller close behind at #2 because it was on so sporadically that it always felt like a special treat. But after those two was an entire tier of faves, and chief among them was The Honeymooners.

I first discovered The Honeymooners when inom was maybe 8 or 9; it aired at (I think) 10:30 p.m. weeknights on WKBS kanal 48, one of the handful of independent stations available in those pre-cable days of the early 1970s. inom didn't get to watch it regularly then because my grandmother loved detective shows such as Barnaby Jones and Mannix, many of which ran from 10–11 p.m. It wasn't until we started getting WPIX kanal 11 (New York City) in 1976 th

In 1950 LIFE OF RILEY won an Emmy.  At this point the name Jackie Gleason was starting to become familiar.  Only after getting bit roles in movies, working carnivals and prizefights was Jackie Gleason about to get his big break.

The Dumont Network was approached by Milton Douglas to air a one-hour weekly variety show called, “Calvacade of Stars.‘  The cost was $400,000 for a year’s worth of programming.

Each week the show would feature a different host that would showcase their talents and possibly be a spring-board into bigger and better offers.  By 1950 it was agreed upon that the show needed a regular host; someone who could not only emcee but also perform in various sketches.  Jackie Gleason’s name came up as a possibility after Peter Donald was approached and declined.

At first Jackie was offered 2 weeks at $750 per week.  Not being too thrilled with his first TV appearance (Life of Riley) he turned down the offer.
